I was raised in a pretty laid back place, where “formal clothing” was a synonym for “no jeans or swim trunks”. So it’s pretty understandable why I was always uncomfortable with wearing super formal looking dresses to prom, it always felt to me like wearing a costume, plus- why buy an outfit for one night only when you can buy items that will still serve you on, let’s say, two occasions? Looking back at what I wore to and how I behaved at my high school prom, way back in the 2000′s, there are many things I would have done differently.  Since we are focusing on fashion, we’ll talk about the outfit. For this post, I decided to draw inspiration from my favorite prom scenes, starting with Grease. Pairing a lacy dress with quirky accessories seems like a cool way to go. First rule of thumb- if you decide to channel your inner Sandy and wear a dress that will serve you on prom and a handful of garden parties- go for accessories that are useful and will work with the rest of your wardrobe.

The dress worn in Pretty in Pink is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you decide to wear such a feminine color- you can afford to go for tough looking accessories and sexy shoes.

One of my favorite teen flicks is 10 Things I Hate About You. I don’t know if it’s for the brilliant cast, the Shakespearean plot or the cool, late 90′s fashion. The blue dress Kat wore to prom seems so effortless and comfortable, I almost wish I wore it myself. The relaxed fit is definitely something I’d look for in a dress. The dress I picked from Topshop has a similar feel to it, while sporting the dipped hem trend.

Romy and Michele’s prom was way back in the 80′s, that’s one way to explain the early Madonna inspired outfits. If your personality is on the gothsy side and you don’t want to channel your inner queen of darkness on prom night (and speaking from experience, you don’t. Those photos are forever!), wearing a black lacy dress with shiny accessories is a good alternative. You do want to look cute, while letting you personality shine.

One thing I learned from Mean Girls, is that there is nothing stopping you from wearing a leather jacket to a formal occasion. If I were to try this, I’d wear a biker jacket over a frilly asymmetric dress, showing killer heels and a lot of bare leg. If I’m playing pretend, than while wearing this I want to also be 5″10, have long red hair and legs from here to the moon.
